Does anyone agree these shows are not funny?!

Question: My younger brother is very in with everything that's trendy on the telly- Hollyoaks, The IT crowd etc.
When it comes to comedy I don't find hardely anything he likes funny. I hate fart jokes, violence, sick jokes, and people just pratting around and acting stupid- its moronic, not funny.
For that reason I am not a fan of The Young Ones (he loves it), The IT crowd (could sit stony faced through the whole thing, its pathetic), Ricky Gervais, Little Britain. Even French and saunders is rubbish now. All the comedy that is on telly just seems stupid. It's just as I said, sick jokes, squealing american accents, violence, and people pratting around- no real jokes, or intelligence about any of it.
All my personal favourites are either stand up comedians (Billy Connelly, Jo Brand, Joan Rivers, Jack Dee, Julian Clary), or old TV shows like My Family (the new ones without Nick are rubbish), Blackadder (the best comedy EVER- they should have done more shows), Vicar of Dibley, etc.

you are right, blackadder rules, melchy baaaaa!!

Has somebody got the 'painters' in?

some of those shows have their moments, but i prefer shows on paramount comedy.
like everybody loves raymond, south park , 2 and a half men and king of queens.

i do agree with you the older comedies are better such as the ones you describe but i DO love The IT Crowd
I mean i love Lee Evans but he hasnt made any new for a while

America does have problems with appropriate comedy.

How do you manage not to find fart jokes funny and still like Billy Connelly? Just a thought.....

Each to their own, I guess. I like a mixture of old and new, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Two Pints of Lager, all good shows in my opinion. With you all the way on Little Britain and anything with Ricky Gervais in it though, I find these shows as funny as cancer.

did you watch al murray the other night, he was hilarious, i couldn't stop laughing throughout the whole show! and catherine tate is really funny! the comic relief one was funny with tony blair! oh my god!

If you like only 'real' stuff, try reading 'The Fart Book' by Benjamin Franklin. Yes, that Franklin. He wrote the book to show why human nature is so screwed up. Interesting read too! You might also, when you are at the bookstore look up the Cocaine book. It has histories of famous people who used cocaine regularly like Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame and Irwin Rommel as well as others. Very interesting read. I do not condone the use of cocaine, but this book is very informative.

I agree that Blackadder was very good. I also agree that fart jokes and slapstick jokes are rubbish (especially anything that involves turkeys being stuck on anyone's head!). I haven't seen The IT Crowd so I can't comment on it. I also hated the American Pie films, and just about anything along the same vein.

However I have to say I do like The Young Ones, Ricky Gervais (especially The Office) and some of the first series of Little Britain, so I kind of half-agree.

I also like some of the older comedies - namely Monty Python (especially the films) and Red Dwarf, and even some of the cartoons like King of the Hill and South Park, but my favourite comedy show of all time is That Mitchell and Webb Look.

I agree with most of your dislikes & likes.
As an earlier contributer has said,Al Murray is brilliant and his last show had my jaws aching from laughing.
But Billy Connelly, I have went off after he started verbally abusing his audiences.
I knew him when he was with The Humblebums (Billy plus Gerry Rafferty) and I knew then he was going to be famous.
He still has his moments though.

I agree, I hate Ricky Grevais. French and Saunders should have retired years ago. The IT crowd is missing an s and a h from it's title.

Seen Julian Clary live, what a laugh. Just booked tickets for next November (yes 2008) to see Lee Evans. Phoenix nights 1 and 2 are brill and so is Peter Kay Live.

Can't stand unfunny people who think they are funny, like Jonathon Ross, Jimmy Carr and Ricky Grevais.

No Skyespir I saw Julian Clary Live in Chatham when he had his Sticky Moments programme on TV. Brilliant. Open line was he gave a small cough and said he had been done the docks sucking on a fishermans friend all day,

I have to admit The Young Ones, The IT crowd, Ricky Gervais and Little Britain are boring.

My brother always makes fun of me cos I like most of the American comeies, i.e. Scrubs, Two and a Half men, King of Queens, etc.

Enjoyed Blackadder in its day but loved Fawlty Towers, that used to crack me up!

i too do not find fart jokes, violence or sick jokes funny it is stupid and not funny because its things that people do and basically there makin fun of themselves, although i do like ricky gervais and i find little britain very funny except the spastic joke and the one where the woman is sick and pisses everywhere!"
i totally agree although im only thirteen i also find billy connolly very funny my mum and dad hav dvds and videos of him and i practically grew up around him im 3/4 scottish and ma dad loves him i also love my family i still find them funny even without nick although he WAS my favrit character iv neva seen blackadder but every1 loves vicar of dibley so 2 be honest i totally agree wiv u!

Well, Im glad you like some sitcoms that I love as well, but you dont like Ricky Gervais..you got something wrong with you. I agree that fart jokes and violence has had its time, although things like Fawlty Towers and Two Ronnies are still classic. The worst has to be American comedy. Because they dont get irony its painful to watch their shows, all with laughter tracks, which come on every 5 seconds. Huzzah for British comedy
