I know that the Hills is not scripted, however; many things happen off camera that the people on the show have to do again in front of the camera. So, in that way they are being fake but it still happened. And obviously MTV picks the best and most juicy parts of their lives!
It's very obvious it's scripted...I think 99.9% of "reality shows" are scripted because producers/writers need to create drama and conflict to make it interesting for viewers.
I think their lives are real - I have read interviews with a few of the actors and it sounds real, but some of the dialogue is probably scripted. I love that show.
no reality shows are real...for such quality picture u need da whole studio set n cooperation....the only reality shows wud be hidden cameras rolling(which would indicate bad quality) without them knowing they are on TV(so they would act normal)

I think its scripted as far as where they go and the subjects they talk about. nobody goes out that much. as far as the actual words that come out of their mouths, i dont think that is scripted.
They are so phony its gross. But they believe themselves so I guess you can say its "real" too.
I think it's real however some parts of it are scripted. Of course it's edited it's not like Big Brother. I don't think the camera is following them everywhere they go. It probably happened in their life then that's when they have to shoot it. Or maybe there is this event so that's only the time the camera crew will be there to shoot.
i think the hills is part scripted and part real and then another part clip and paste..... i am sure they prompt them on what to talk about but i don't think they obviously make them do anything... we have to remember that the production crews that piece everything together has a HUGE part in what actually gets aired...
