I have just watched the last ever episode of the sopranos and found it confusing!

Question: Was it meant to be ambiguous? Did it intend to leave it to your imagination, as in, was that a hit man, who entered the toilet? Also the other man, on his own, with the baseball cap at another table, was he a hit man? Or did i miss something entirely. If so, could someone please explain? Thanks.

It's all been explained by the creator - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21440301/

i have no idea what was going on but i know alot of people who watched it and were very let down by the ending!!!

I think their presence just symbolizes the paranoia that comes with Tony's lifestyle.

When the series finale aired in the states there were many theories to the blackout ending, a popular one was, that when Bobby and Tony were talking earlier they conclude that you never here the one coming and everything just goes black, if you view the ending from Tony’s point of view, everything does go black at the end! Suggesting his life does end, how is not shown but the various things were set up in that last scene for you to play that out in your own mind, the focus on the various other people around the family in the last scene hints at a possible hit. See how E4 kept showing the Bobby and Tony speech about death when it comes and everything going black as the trailer for the last series? Perhaps playing on this popular theory and helping viewers come to at least a plausible conclusion when they viewed the blackout ending.

However after the finale aired in the states the series creator David Chase said that Tony did not get whacked! So the ending hints that he did, but according to Chase he did not! The link to this David Chase news has already been posted here.

I like to think that Tony’s life is at that moment lost which explains the blackout as described by Bobby and Tony earlier, but as Chase says, not from getting whacked.

So maybe some other way, could be heart attack or similar, choking on an onion ring maybe! People have said they have experienced death and are brought back to life by someone with medical experience. The inconclusive blackout does leave room for the Heimlich manoeuvre or the kiss of life from one of the other characters in the last scene!

I think that Tony is dead.

Reason 1. - Bobby said that when it happens you never see it coming, it just happens.

Reason 2. The guy in the diner kept looking at Tony and then he went to the bathroom - in a reference to Michal Corlene in the Godfather, I think he came out and shot Tony in the back of the head, hence the instant black.

Either way its the best series ever - I all have the boxsets and I'm devastated to see it go. Brilliance, sheer brilliance
