Adam Faith traversed both the pop scene and the acting world during his tragically curtailed life (a heart attack at the age of 62), but as far as the small screen is concerned, it is for the drama series Budgie that he is best remembered.

The complete first season of the programme has just made its escape onto DVD, as a four-disc set containing all 13 episodes from the debut year. Faith stars as the down-and-out, but forever optimistic, Ronald ‘Budgie’ Bird. He’s a petty crook that clings like a limpet to the fringes of the criminal fraternity in London’s Soho, and he’s always got one eye on a get-rich quick scam, and the other one on the big time.

He’s got a wife, Jean (Georgina Hale), who he almost never sees, a girlfriend and an illegitimate lovechild hidden away, but he bounces on irrepressibly, knowing he’s got admirers out there. For one, his girlfriend Hazel (Lynn Dalby) admires his cheeky, happy-go-lucky style, even if that does mean watching over a fruit machine that’s been illegally acquired. Then, there’s Charles Endell esquire (Ian Cuthbertson), the ‘Mr Big’ of Budgie’s scene, who admires Budgie’s never-say-die attitude. But admiration doesn’t pay the bills!

A huge hit on its original screening in 1971, Budgie was the first TV drama hit for Faith, having already conquered the music industry – where he spent some twenty years at the top, competing with the likes of Cliff Richard for the public’s affections. This was arguably the pinnacle of his career, which also included jobs as a financial journalist, stage actor and a music mogul
