I don't have digitial TV reception equipment?!

Question: All my TV's are analogue. No dish, no digital boxes. Just analogue receiving TV's with analogue DVD and Video player. My area is due to go digital broadcast only soon. If I decide just to watch DVD's and Videos, will I need a TV license? I won't own any equipment that would be capable of receiving TV broadcasts.

you raise a valid argument, if there is no signal being received then in theory you shouldn't need to pay for a license. but proving you don't have the equipment and have no intention of doing so may be harder!

I am sure owning a TV and aerial would mean a licence is needed.

thats very ture!
but i believe if you have the tv you will still need a licence because you are very easierly capable of buying a cheap free view box. but im not too sure so dont take what i say.
contact them and see what they say, but since their money hungry freaks im sure they will tell you that you will need a licence.

by the way...why wont you buy free view?
the cheapest is around £15 and im sure when you switch over all the prices for them will drop.

According to the TV licensing website:

You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one of our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence.

Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at:

Pretty well all TV's are analogue, some may have a digital input, but it has to be turned into an analogue signal to be displayed on the TV.

Your DVD is digital, that why it is called Dvd. However, the digital signal is turned into analogue when it goes on to the SCART, that connects to your analogue TV.

The whole UK is going to go digital, but that only means that you will have to fit a "set top box" to your analogue TV so that you can receive and view the digital programmes.

The question about your TV licence is quite a different matter, and whether your area is covered by analogue or digital TV transmissions has no bearing on the matter.

A TV licence is required if you install or use Wireless RECEIVING equipment such as a TV or video recorder. If on the other hand you are only viewing DVD and Video (is that video tape?) and none of that equipment is capable of receiving an off air signal, then you might be able to avoid the need for a licence.

I say, "may", because if you are using a VCR or Video disc player to playback into your TV, you might find that this equipment already has a built in receiver, and even though you might not be using it or have it connected to an antenna, you would still need a licence, as a result.

You could think about purchasing a professional studio video tape or disc player which does not have an internal receiver, and then you can tell the TV Licensing Office that you no longer have equipment needing a receiving licence, and maybe they will pay you a visit to confirm.

You will need a television licence (not license) if you have any receiving equipment, digital or analogue only. The law doesn't care whether you choose to recieve digital or not. It assumes that because you can, you will.

If you have someone knock at your door then they'll think that you're hiding your Freeview box.

This is the law and you risk a £1000 fine when you're caught. They have a very high detection rate.

The only way that you may possibly get away without a tv licence is if you had pure monitors without any receiveing equipment at all and everything else was without tuners.
This means that you could not have any UHF interconnections beween your boxes.

Even if you only have a tv tuner card in your PC you should have a licence.
