Digital Television as of Feb. 18, 2009???!

Question: What is this talk about only using digital televisions as of Feb. 18, 2009? I saw this commercial for it in spanish but it didn't really explain anything. Can anyone please give me any details. Why are they doing this? Will everyone have to go out and buy a plasma or something? I don't get it.

That is when standard-definition (NTSC) broadcasts are sceduled to end and full time HD begins for all TV broadcasts. Those who don't want to pop for a HDTV set would have to buy a converter box to recieve the new signals on their existing standard definition TVs. Those who have digital cable aren't affected AFAIK.

For many years, since the invention of television, it has been using what is called an analog signal, now most of the stations are using both analog and digital signals, not to long ago, congress voted in a ruling that at time, February 18, 2009, all signals must be digital and the analog signal be shut down, so people with ordinary TVs will have to get a special box that receives digital signals. Your antenna will become obsolete.
