What are the ethical boundaries for comedians? Isn't a lot of comedy making !

Question: What's the line between being funny and being mean? Am I the only one that watched Borat, laughed til I cried, but still wondered if he should be doing all that (after all none of these people were in on the joke). Sarah Silverman also recently got a lot of complaints about her jokes about Britney and her kids. Your thoughts?

The line is a fine one. But as long as you make fun of yourself as well as others, you're all right. The best comedians make jokes at their own expense all the time.

I colpetley agree , when I watched Borat you find it hilarious but there is that intrinsic guilt of naything slightly racist etc embedded into our minds

Stuff.

its all a joke

thge bottom line is comedians are mean and probably always be but if youtake its seriously then well you(not you ,the people being made fun off)
need to lighten up

I disagree, like you said everyone's being made fun of, if people can't handle it don't watch Borat or Sarah Silverman which by the way is the funniest person alive!

jokes are jokes, they shouldn't be made to hurt people.

Stand up comedy is satire which is protected speech under the Constitution. How can you have ethics and be funny too? Maybe not have so much cursing in the routine. You will always get complaints about your humor. If criticism is offensive to you then maybe try being a priest. god knows there is no stress in that job.

I agree, i watched Borat and was crying it was so funny, but it is racist, so I'm like half half

A lot of what Borat does is mean, but I take it for it is, he acts stupid so he can get reactions from people. I do not get offended by his stuff because I know it is all just an act. People like Britney Spears are fair game because they do stupid things. If you are going to be a celebrity you must understand that you will be under the microscope. People like Britney and Paris who do stupid things anyways deserve the negative publicty anyways. If you dont want comedians like Silverman to make fun of you, then dont drink and drive, go to rehab over and over again, etc...

there isnt really a "line". it depends on the person's point of view and who is person/people making fun of. ie, carlos mencia (honduran) makes fun everyone but mostly mexicans (and he also uses the N-word ALOT) but people dont seem to have a problem with it, on the other hand if robin williams used the n-word, his career MIGHT be over (dont take my word for it).

Political correctness is ruining this world! If what I have to say is "offensive" but isn't fueled by hatred then it should be allowed to be said.
