Seinfeld was so successful because they used a laugh track and music as well as sound effects! Brilliant!
Some times we (the viewing audience) don't understand the writers sense of humour and with a laugh track it helps to open the mind to something new that is just funny. Like... New Yorkers have a different take on what's funny compared to someone from Oaklahoma. I like the option of not having to figure it out if it's funny or not and get an insight to the writers humour.
Friends is funny and so much of it is weird! Phoebe is so 'out there' and the way they made her come off as acceptable is by using a laugh track.
So, yeah... I like'em. (SCRUBS is off the hook funny without one though!)
The laughing sound only makes the viewer(US!) feel like idiots. it is like a buzzer telling us... 'Hey dude. u gotta laugh at these nonsense'
But then again, its for the effects of the show. and maybe perhaps there may also be some idiots watchin' the comedy.

I like normal laughter, not someone telling me what part I should laugh at and when. It rather ruins the show for me, if you get my meaning!

drives me up the wall. i guess some are not as bad as others, but the friends one is like nails on a chalk board. i doubt people are that dumb to have to be cued to laugh
I can only watch one show with laugh tracks, and it's Frasier. If a show doesn't have a laugh track, I tend to like it.
