I did laugh when I saw your question as I say this to my other half every time it happens - which is every time! It really annoys me and I can't for the life of me think why they do it unless it is just a reflex action because everybody else is clapping.

    Cuz they have to fart and you know those d*mn microphones can pick up the littlest sounds. They have to cover it up somehow. LMAO!
    The reason is as simple as it is disturbing: they are instructed to clap themselves by an important member of the production crew known as the Floor Director. He is the guy, or gal, with the radio mike and rolled up script. If a Floor Director asked contestants to crap themselves, they'd probably do that as well. I can't stand those inane waves to the camera by contestants on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Why do they do it?...that's right...told to do it by the FD.
