The ratings were slipping during the 11th season (#97 on the Nielsen Ratings). Fox was planning on bringing it back for Season 12, but then they learned that the production company wanted $1.5 million per episode. Fox didn't think tha tthey would be able to get enough advertising revenue from the show for each of the episodes, so they decided to cancel it instead. There is no actual series finale since Fox decided to not renew their contract after the 11th season was finished.
The pregnancy thing that the other person was talking about was actually supposed to be included as part of the show back in 1991 (six years before the show ended). The child ended up being stillborn which caused Katey to miss a few episodes. Afterwards, in order to clear up why Peggy was no longer pregnant, the writers changed the story around to say that she had been having a bad dream instead of her actually being pregnant. She actually had her first two kids later on during the series, but they weren't included as part of the show. Her third child wasn't born until well after the show had already ended which I think was in 2005 or so (she was like 52 at the time and had to have a surrogate mother). So the pregnancy had nothing to do with the show's cancellation at all.

The woman playing the wife (I think her name is Katey Sagal?) was pregnant with her third child and wanted time off to raise her kids, and Ed O'Neill didn't want to continue without her.
I think it was due to poor ratings when more family comedies came about, however I think that one of its main competitors was Rosanne.
