As much as I would like it to be, the head was not a fake; Sara is definitely dead. The Powers That Be decided that the storyline moved better with Sara's death, so they had her die. This negated Sarah Wayne Callies' 22 episode contract, and although they wanted SWC in a couple of episodes to wrap up the storyline before they killed her off, she refused and they couldn't come to any kind of agreement on the matter. SWC allowed them to use pictures from wardrobe fittings to create the mock up of her head. On the show, though, it is not a mock-up; it is definitely hers - she is definitely dead. Just wanted to thank Meredith44 for the link. I don't normally follow that kinda stuff, I just follow the show, but truth be known, the storyline is so much better with her being dead. The fact that the main character, Michael, is going to do God knows what, all because he thinks Sarah's still alive...just adds to the drama and makes it that much more intense and fun to watch. Thanks!
If you mean "Is that really Sara's head in the box?" The answer is yes. The actress decided not to return to the show when they wanted her to come back for half a season so they could kill her character off. She just decided not to come back at all and stay at home with her new baby.
