Serious question about UK soaps?!

Question: Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale

All have one major thing in common...pubs

In all of them this is the main focal point

but why? i live in london and in soaps the pub is seen as everyone goes there, yet in real life, only football fans, few families and drunkards are there

I dont watch hollyoaks, but it seems different in this aspect

...and how come you never hear someone in the Rovers Return say "Did you see Eastenders last night?" I thought that soaps were supposed to be realistic?!
I think you hit the nail on the head it is a focul point in which you can see a dozen or more characters at the same time rather than skip from house to house which helps create a better flow of a scene and a story.
How come characters complain of having little money, yet they are in the cafe/pub morning noon and night. Why go to a cafe for a drink, isn't is easier to make one at home.
OK I know it's not real
nope even hollyoaks has a main pub a lot of the story lines revolve around this, and a nightclub i believe...soap opera's insult most people, every area people live has a local pub but rarely is it the community center too. I just think the writers have a warped concept of real life now. but then again its supposed to be an escape isn't it!
the best way to look at this is to look at your own street
where do all your neighbours go to meet each other
do they actually bother talking to the ones four doors away or does your street have anything in common other than a post code
in soap land the size of the cast and the location decide the size of the budget therefore cast are kept down as are the location sizes
The best way to get character integration is in a social surrounding ie the local pub so therefore every soap has a pub or bar (even hollyoaks)
you will also notice that rich people dont have washing machines or driers in their modern households and they only go to the toilet when they are in the pub.
They all use the local corner shop to do their shopping,
and nobody has a packed lunch unless their partner brings it to them later
Have you also noticed how everybody works local(even salesmen)and they can be interrupted at work by any other cast member (and not by mobile phone)
watch us soaps
Nobody seems to have a job on eastenders. Max is always just walking round the square. Stacy, deano and billy seem to be able to make a living on a little shitty market that is open everyday of the week but there are never any customers there.
If i lived there id proberley be in the pub all day.

Ps All the pubs in soaps are busy antime of the day, i never go into a pub at 2-4 o'clock that is busy (unless footy is on)
Nobody seems to have a bathroom...

And on Neighbours, whenever someone leaves a house, there is always somebody outside about to knock on the door.
I know, its like in soap land, everyone is a raging alchy - and no one ever has a cup of tea in their own home, they always go into a cafe.
soaps arent real theyre fiction does it really matter if they use a pub as a set ive got a question why do people moan about the soaps but watch them anyway?
That gets my back up as well - they are always in the pub, if poeple don't work they r still in the pub!

No one has a washing machine in Eastenders - all down the launderette - its 2007 how many people on here use a launderette! (unless you are a student of course in digs)
- Its a throwback to 'times if old' where people did 'go down the pub' to drink and meet. Even now, in small villages etc, the pub is the focal point of life.

- Its a hand tool for the programme makers. A place where EVERYONE in the show can meet and come and go. Saves on spending out & effort of going to loads of different locations / places.
isnt silly that they all go to the pub for there lunch [corrie] when they all live beside it
i mentioned this a few weeks back where do they get there money from?
You're right about them all being based around the pub.

Hollyoaks has The Dog in the Pond pub, The Loft, The S.U. Bar.
Its a great place for all the people on the street to meet. Like a social group. This makes it beeter because all the characters can say their bit, then they move to somewhere else in pub. makes it much easier to film.
