Laugh tracks are typically used in sitcoms because the majority of the American population are sheep and don't know when they are supposed to laugh.
This is what killed "Arrested Development". Despite being one of the smartest comedies on television (even smarter than the Office), it did not have a laugh track and viewers did not know if they were supposed to laugh at the jokes or not.
Its called programing the public. They want you to think it funny even when its not. They're trying to control our emotions just like the politicians do trying to brainwash us with their policy talk.
