Eye on Idol

Tickets will go on sale tonight for the first ever Canadian Idol Top 3 concert tour, which will take Brian Melo, Jaydee Bixby and Carly Rae Jepsen to cities across Canada this fall. The announcement comes after the biggest vote in the series' five-year history, where fans cast almost 5 million ballots in an attempt to choose the winner.

Last night's record voting numbers were an increase of 22 per cent compared to last year. The entire fifth season saw 37,321,772 votes cast -- 62 per cent more than were counted in the 2006 federal election.

The votes didn't just come from a select group, either: the top 2 performance episode was watched by a whopping 2.3 million viewers. It was the top program of the night in all key demographics, attracting more than one million viewers in both the 18-49 (1,000,700) and 25-54 (1,084,000) demos during the second half-hour.

The Top 3 concert tour, being presented by Telus, will hit 15 Canadian cities beginning on Nov. 18 and is the first national tour to feature more than one Canadian Idol finalist. Tickets are generally available through the venues themselves (see chart below) and go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 11 following the two-hour, star-studded Canadian Idol finale.

Fans in PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta will have the opportunity to see their Idols perform some of their favourite songs from this season as well as a few new selections. The three singers will perform together and alone, backed up by a live band.
