It's what they call a loosely scripted reality show. The contestants are told to be rude to the parents so they look like the bad girlfriend/boyfriend, so that the new daters will look better. Some of the responses to the rude comments look staged to be "shocked" or "appalled" but I bet in real life the kids aren't really that rude or disrespectful. It makes for great TV and good ratings, which makes more money for the network. It's all about the money, bottom line.
