Why do Newsreaders have a laptop in front of them?!

Question:

Why do Newsreaders have a laptop in front of them?

I suppose BBC and ITV want to look 'with it' but they seem to serve little purpose except to look a bit stupid! comments?

They have earpieces dont they? haha you're right!!!! ^_^ In years gone by newsreaders would have last minute breaking news slipped to them on a printed piece of paper which would be fiddly and generally the newsreader would look like an idiot fiddling with it for a few seconds until they could read it out. Now the breaking news comes up on their laptops and the newsreader looks a lot more sleek and sophisticated as they just glance toward the screen casually.
The wonders of modern technology! Because they're playing 'JT's Blocks' in between stories...
