Does anyone remember evil Alex Swinton on Coronation Street?
He was stepdad to young Wayne Hayes who was fostered by Roy and Hayley Cropper over Christmas in 2000? Alex was played by actor Joe Simpson who’s a Sunderland footy fan and there’s a cracking interview with Joe on the rather excellent Salut Sunderland.
Joe talks about what it was like being booed by over 47,000 people when he was singled out for attention during the opening match of the 2001-2002 season, against Ipswich at the Stadium of Light. Invited onto the pitch to make the halftime lottery draw. Joe was introduced as “evil Alex Swinton” from Coronation Street. The 47,370 crowd rose to the bait with a chorus of what he calls “pantomime booing”. Poor bloke!
