They say that competition improves the quality of production.?!

Question:

They say that competition improves the quality of production.?

The BBC doesn't compete because it's publically funded. Is the quality of its programming affected by lack of competition?
After all it doesn't get affected by ratings does it.

Answers:

No, that's a rather simplistic formula. In fact, it sometimes works the opposite way. BBC is one example, they have a higher quality product than US programming, even if it is sometimes less popular or underfunded.

What competition does is tune the product to the marketplace. Sometimes that means higher quality to meet demand for quality. Other times it means lower quality to meet a demand for lower price. It may also mean to discard any real quality in favor of sensationalism or other popular appeal.
