Is Goong 2 coming out or not? By Goong, I mean Princess Hours (k-drama). I keep hearing that it's coming out in late 2007/early 2008. Are the characters going to be the same?

Answers:

Release Date: Unknown; that will depend upon when (if) filming actually does get started.

Video Release Note: (7/25/01) Something that hasn't been confirmed about this project is whether it will definitely get a theatrical release, or if it will go to video, like many sequels do.

MPAA Rating: The original film was rated PG. The script pages online at TheGoonies.com have swear words, so it's possible this sequel could be PG-13 (I doubt it would get an R though).

Title Note: (11/25/01) According to Richard Donner, the title will not be The Goonies 2, but just The Goonies (yes, again). (11/15/03) Two years later, while talking to MTV, Donner revealed that the title of this sequel may actually be 'The Groonies.' (11/21/03) According to AICN, the current working title is actually 'Goonies Never Say Die.

Distributor: Although they have yet to announce it officially, presumably Warner Bros. would handle this like the original. Should this project indeed be direct-to-cable, one of HBO's channels (like HBO Family?) would likely host the premiere.

Producer: Richard Donner, who directed the original; his credits as producer include the Lethal Weapon series (and many other films he directed), but it also includes TV/video projects like Two-Fisted Tales, Made Men, and W.E.I.R.D. World. It's unknown to what extent Amblin Entertainment will be involved.

Cast: None announced as confirmed yet.

Cast Notes: (7/26/01) If all of the (former) kids from the original movie returns, the cast would be: Sean Astin (Michael "Mikey" Walsh), Josh Brolin (Brandon "Brand" Walsh), Jeff Cohen (Lawrence "Chunk" Cohen), Corey Feldman (Clark "Mouth" Devereaux), Kerri Green (Andrea "Andy" Carmichael), Martha Plimpton (Stefanie "Stef" Steinbrenner) and Jonathan Ke Quan (Richard "Data" Wang). It's likely Joe Pantoliano and Robert Davi would return as Francis and Jake Fratelli. The performers who played Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) and "Sloth" Fratelli (John Matuszak) are both dead. Out of Corey Feldman's last 18 feature-length projects, only Bordello of Blood in 1996 made it to theaters in the USA, with the other 17 going direct to video or cable. So, if this project gets a theatrical release, it will have a distinction. (11/18/03) According to a report over at AICN, Paul Walker has expressed interest to director Richard Donner about being involved as well. Since he's not a returning cast member, and obviously too old to be a new Goonie, might he be a Fratelli? The story also notes that the character of Sloth will be returning, though there's no mention about whom might be cast in the role.

Director: Not announced yet.

Director Notes: (4/12/03) It's not yet known if Richard Donner would return for this sequel (but he would definitely be producing even if he doesn't direct).

Screenwriter: Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris (cowriters of X2: X-Men United)

Screenwriter Note: (11/21/03) At one point, the screenwriters were announced as being Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci (feature debuts; they're also working on The 28th Amendment for Richard Donner), but AICN now reports that they have been replaced by X2 cowriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris.

Based Upon: This is the sequel to the 1985 kids movie that grossed $61.4 million in the U.S. (that was enough to land it at the #9 spot for the year, between The Jewel of the Nile at #8 and Spies Like Us at #10). The DVD special edition will be released in the fall of 2001.

Premise: A new mystery arises, so Mikey (Astin) rounds up the old crew again, who are all now in their 20's, and they're off for another Goonies adventure... (11/25/01) The script is apparently being rewritten to focus on a new group of kids, with some of the aforementioned original Goonies also joining in. (11/15/03) You can find out a bit more in this MTV.com article.

Filming: (7/20/01) Richard Donner recently told the Associated Press that, depending upon the script, production could start within six months to a year (ie, sometime in early/mid 2002), but that depends upon the script (so it could easily take much longer). (11/2/02) Well, 16 months later, and this film still hasn't happened... will it ever? (11/15/03) Well, another year later, and this movie is still in development (according to MTV), though there's still no word about an exact start date.

Genre: Action, Kids, Sequel

Status: In Development
