Trying to remember a Uk tv show from late 80s early 90s. It was a chat show presented by a ventriloquist...?

First of all I don't mean "Strassman" although I think it was quite similar. I think the guy was American or Canadian and he had several different dummies. I think one was a punk rocker and another may have been a dragon. The show was an hour long and had variety acts on it like singers or motor cycles stunts (I remember the 'wall of death'). The show was on either in the late 80s or early 90s and aired about 9pm on a midweek slot. Please help coz this is driving me nuts!!

I do remember "Scorch" and I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm getting that confused with the programme I'm thinking of! The one I mean was literally a talk show presented in front of a live studio audience, not a sitcom. It was kinda like a variety show.

EDIT...I think this is the guy because if you click the link at the bottom of that above link it takes you to his site. He had a tortoise and some boy puppet. I am sure this is who you mean as I remember the show too!!
