The show is scheduled as a mid-season replacement for the 2007-2008 TV season. That would probably put its season 5 premiere around January 2008.
I think the 4 year jump is a good idea, because it may help the show last longer and avoid cancellation (the fate of many shows that became boring as they followed teens from high school to college). It also will allow the writers to go in completely new directions with the characters and story lines.
There are supposedly going to be diary entries (or something like that) online during the fall to fill viewers in on what is happening while the gang is at college. Also, there will be flashbacks during the episodes to show some things that happened during the years that are skipped.
