No, as far as we know Sawyer does not have a previous connection to Zeke aka Tom. As was mentioned, it was merely a nickname that Sawyer gave to him in reference to his appearance. (I personally think its a reference to one of the farmers from the Wizard of Oz.) But it was just another one of Sawyer's wacky nicknames.
Although, it is LOST...so you'll have to wait to find out for certain.
