Oh, if Rosanna is coming back, then for sure Paul's still alive -- that's too delicious a triangle to pass up. And they DID show him after he hit the ground -- he wasn't all mangled and smashed.
It could be that he took a small commitment elsewhere, a made-for-tv-movie, guest star in another cbs series, etc. Or, contract negotiations...
