What is the difference between daytime soap operas and nightime tv shows?!

What is the difference between daytime soap operas and nightime tv shows?
On soap operas, when a character leaves the show, they find a replacement for that character. But, on tv shows, if the character leaves, they just kill them off and don't get a replacement. For instance, on general hospital, the character of carly has had about four different people play her. Why didn't they just kill her off?
Answers:
On a soap, if the character is important to the story, they re-cast that person.
They go both ways on a night time show. THey don't kill off Carly because she an integral part of the show (a main character).
