Mister C, what did your answer have to do with the question? As of matter of fact it wasn't an answer it was just a random comment that makes no sense.

Answers:

I am one of those older people here on Y!A. I saw The mini-series when it originally aired. The next generation was just a continuation of the story since the first series did so well.

For me the first one, which aired when I was 7, was the most emotional. Being born in the 70's of course there was still a lot of "Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud!" going around and we were all trying to establish where we came from.

In fact for our family reunion that we held the following year, my mom and my older cousins did research and were able to trace our family's ancestors back to a plantation in South Carolina, but because many records didn't exist (many slaveowners were illiterate and because they often changed the name of the slaves), that's as far back as we could go. Those same cousins also made us younger ones perform African dances for the entertainment section of the reunion.

One thing that isn't talked about much with the first series is the amount of violence that followed it. There were alot of folks who just became angry with what they saw and decided to go out and start beating up White people. They really didn't understand that Alex Haley was sending the message for us to be proud people and overcome the hardships our ancestors went through. Unfortunetly to this day, many still don't understand that. That is the main reason why not only African American history but that of the Asians, Latinos and other races' history needs to be disscused within the public school classroom.

You got to know where you came from in order to point yourself in the right direction!
