Trying out for American Idol.?!

Question:

Trying out for American Idol.?

Ok, everyone keeps telling me I should try out for American Idol and I am gonna do it. I am 28 years old and I have a very powerful voice. I am white but can sing like a sista. Anyway, I was thinking of doing. And I am telling you by Jennifer Holiday and it sounds awesome. The problem is...it has been showcased an awful lot and do you think that if I sing this song that the producers will not pass me through to sin g for Randy, Simon and Paula. I only have like 6 seconds to impress staff/producers. Does anyone have some suggestions of songs that are big, powerful, in your face, wow, amazing, and can blow them away in 6 seconds? I would so appreciate the input, auditions are in less than 2 weeks in San Diego. Someone suggested Martina McBride, I don't do country though, it sounds good and not countryish, so what do you think?? Thanks everyone.

I just wanted to let everyone know kinda how I sing. Give an idea of how I sound to help with song choice. I mean nothing more. I know that race has nothing to do with it. I mean no offense to anyone.

Think about this-If you were to win AI, what type of album would you hope to put out? Rock, R&B, Pop, etc.? What would your image be? Sexy, conservative, artsy, rebelious?
Who would be your fans? What is their age, where do they live, what are their interests?
What is your message? What do you hope to convey to your audience?
What is it about you that sets you apart from the thousands of other contestants? Why will people buy your album?
Really think about these questions, because the producers do. Answering them should help you narrow down your song choice, and hopefully give you a little confidence at your audition. Remember, they're looking for the total package, so dress the part and don't be afraid to show them who you are!
I would think that picking something unexpected would help you to stand out. If you like big voices, look into gospel, the blues, jazz standards. Shirley Bassey or Mahalia Jackson aren't heard much, or Janice Joplin if you like rock.
Good Luck to you! Remember- Clay Aiken didn't even make it to the judges year 1, and Jordin was rejected by american juniors and star search!
One more thing- It seems like a lot of people get in trouble by singing a song that's really powerful. The judges expect you to be better than the original in order to impress them. People seem to do well singing an easier song that makes their voice seem better by comparison. If you bust out with power voice during Hollywood week, it'll blow them away.
