has anone attempted to, or actually made a uniform from the original series? there are patterns in the star flet technical manual, and i'm thinking of doing it.

I wouldn't use the pattern from the Technical Manual, they are fairly generic and not too accurate. Roddenberry.com has more accurate patterns, http://www.roddenberry.com/?action=shop.... .
If you end up wanting to buy one, Shadow Dale Creations makes among the best replicas out there, http://www.shadowdalecreations.com/index... . They're not cheap though. Another costume maker you might try is http://www.stores.ebay.com/katarra8... . She's made a lot of Star Trek costumes for fan films.
