Why are the contestants in the bonus round in the game show Cram sleeping in the supplied beds with their shoes on... a la SpongeBob SquarePants?

Don't worry, I know the rules to this day...

The premise of this game show was to see how effective cramming is. Contestants were locked in a booth viewable to the public and had to stay awake for 24 hours studying the materials given them.

During the course of the show they would perform stunts while trying to answer questions from their study materials. The team that was able to stay focused and answer enough questions correctly in their sleep deprived state where then put into the bonus round,

In the bonus round they would go to bed - don masks, get in a soft bed, listen to a monotonous woman drone facts that you will are going to be tested on. After the three minute commercial break, they'd then go to answering the questions about what they just heard.

This is of course assuming they didn't fall asleep or lose focus.
