Daytime TV - Can you dupe a lie detector????!

Question:

Daytime TV - Can you dupe a lie detector????

Watched Jeremy Kyle on Friday and this guy had apparently "stolen" from his partner but kept denying it and his partner now wanted him to take a lie detector test to prove his innocence.
The result of the lie detector was that he was lying and the poor woman just wanted him to confess and he was still adamant that he did not take the money.
Can the lie detector give a false reading? Personally I dont think he was telling the truth but you never know....

Answers:

Yes, which is why the results are not admissible in court.

Interesting article... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2002...
Quote, "Last year, Attorney General John Ashcroft estimated the false-positive rate of polygraphs at 15%, about a one-in-six chance, at a news conference."

Another article... http://www.psychologymatters.org/polygra...
Quote, "The accuracy (i.e., validity) of polygraph testing has long been controversial. An underlying problem is theoretical: There is no evidence that any pattern of physiological reactions is unique to deception. An honest person may be nervous when answering truthfully and a dishonest person may be non-anxious."

Another interesting site... http://www.newstatesman.com/200610160033...
it mentions that Aldrich Ames (a spy) managed to easily pass three polygraphs, even though he was later proven guilty.

And an anti-polygraph site (so there is an inherent bias) has some links... https://antipolygraph.org/
