The entire DragonBall Z saga and all where completed and done fully in Japan before even being shown in the USA. When Goku reaches Namek, he fights and defeats the Gynu Force. Then he is badly hurt during the last fight with the Gynu. After he heals he fights Frieza. He becomes a Super Sayian and almost defeats Frieza. You will find out what happened to him in the begining of the Anroid Saga. Same with what happened to Goku when Namek exploded.
