Canadian tv guide mystery..?!

Question:

Canadian tv guide mystery..?

No one seems to know what I'm talking about, but here goes! Back in 1992 when I was 10, we were visiting relations in Canada. I remember trying to use a tv guide to find a programme but it got complicated - next to the channel were two boxes, one was white with a black number in, the other was black with a white number in. I remember you had to do something with these numbers to find the channel number, but what you had to do was lost on me. I was explained to me several times and apparently I still didn't get it. Ring a bell with anyone?? Thanks!

Answers:

Yes - back then everyone used VCR's to tape shows they couldn't watch. So many people had trouble figuring out how to work their VCR's that a company came out with a neat little unit you could use and just punch in the number in the box, next to the channel listing. It's been so long since I used one, or a VCR for that matter (!) that I believe the two different boxes were for the manufacturers. Some worked on the "white box" numbers....say for example General Electric or Panasonic, the black one may be for your Emerson Electric model. The unit told you which one to use after programming your easy tape machine.
I swear it made my life soooooo much easier and I actually managed to tape shows. Before using the actual VCR program buttons, it was hit and miss.
Hope that answers your question!!
