It depends on where u live and if there are any windows near u!

Office buildings and radio (especially FM) don't mix well together. All the surrounding metal in your bldg. and the presence of other buildings around you kills the signal. Your best bet is always an antenna (that's why radios get better reception in the car - built in antenna).

Go to Radio Shack or another electronics store and tell the clerk your problem. They can probably recommend a radio and cheap antenna that will help. Since they are right there in your city, they are aware of the problems. Some radio stations offer free cheapo antennas because they're all aware that reception is bad in the downtown areas.

I have an interesting device that I bought years ago that really boosts the antenna power of your AM radio. It's a big, round plastic device called a "Select-A-Tenna." You put it next to your radio and - wow! What a difference. I haven't checked lately, they may have a similar product for FM.

But to your actual question. Most any new radio you buy these days will produce a decent enough sound and receive available stations. You don't need to spend major bux, but make sure the one you buy has some sort of antenna connection (usually on the back - maybe just a couple of little screws). Again, ask the clerk what inexpensive radios they have that he/she can recommend for your purposes. Something as simple as a long piece of wire can be an effective antenna.
Good Luck!

Check out the C. Crane company....... (ccradio.com); they have some great stuff for radio listening. We are talking some serious equipment here, but not all that expensive.
