Has anyone called into a radio talk show?!
Question: what is the process after someone (I guess the producer) answers the phone ?
Do they just hang-up on you afterwards without saying anything ? Sometimes it seem like they just hang up on a caller...
Anyway, I'm just curious about the whole experience.

I've called several shows, including "The Jay Thomas Show" on Sirius and the Ron Barr's "Sports By-Line". You call up, a producer answers and asks you what you want to talk about, you tell him, he puts you on hold, and you listen to the show while you wait.
The host says "OK, here's Toucan Sam" and you hear about half-a-second of static and then you're on the air. You say your thing, and sometimes the host will say "Goodbye" if he has time, but if he's short on time, he may just cut you off.
I've called in before...just to request a song..they usually tell you that you're on the air...you speak then they ask where you're from and they hang up, what's interesting is that you might not hear yourself on the air until later...meaning that it's not airing as you speak...it's delayed.

Same happened to me as butterfly when I was requesting a song. i think that part is taped, and they fit it in when possible. I have called twice, though, when I had something to add to a conversation that the DJ's were having. The producer listened to what I had to offer, told me to hang on, and in a few seconds the DJ said Hello. We spoke, and when I hung up I could hear the last few seconds of what I was saying, on the radio, because of the delay.
I'm a radio freak from Belgium for about 35 years know. I did call many radio stations around the world. Like ABC in Australia ones and many times to a Local AM Radio Station in Canada 980 KRUZ or CKRU at this station. http://www.980kruz.ca
I did talk (chat) many time with DJ Mike Melnik of the Breakfast Show at 6 AM (EST) 12 noon CET here in Europe.
One time Mike did restart his PC but did forgot the put the volume down on the studio panel mixer. When John Badham the News Reader at 980 Kruz (CKRU) was on air with the news. He also did hear the funny sound of the PC that was at a reboot. But John keep on reading the news and did not respond to much on the noise.
What did happened i did make a recording of the hole thing. And did report that to Mike because i did tell on air "Sorry, I did reboot my PC and the volume feeder was still open"
I did send a peace of the recording to the station and Mike did put it live on air "The Human Blooper " that was very funny we had so much fun Mike, John and my self. Human but funny !
It was very strange to them some one in Europe ho did make a recording of " A Human Blooper " at a Local Canadian Radio Station
And I did ask for many records to play in there "Kruze Cafe" at 12 noon EST (6 PM CET here in Europe) and i also did here my last words to due do thee delay of the audio server of about 1 min and that is funny (also the delay of the studio feet when the put on hold before you go live on air via the phone)
You have to make shore that the volume at home is down when you go live on air via the phone or the sound of your audio will be pick up by the mic in the studio and that makes a heavy noise on the radio which is not funny the name that singing around (the sound of the radio at home via the mic of the phone picked up by the mic in the studio back to your radio at home around and around etc)
And i always make a recording when i speak live on air. And no i don't pay very mush to phone over seas only € 0.09 per minute and € 0.10 connection fee
and about € 0.40 per minute to phone Australia
US $1.00 = around € 1.48 at the moment
I don't listen or phone not any more to that station why ? well 980 Kruz was the only Radio Station that was on line with a real AM signal (the output of a radio tuner live on the Internet)
Since last august 2007 the don't use the real AM signal any more on line the the sound of the studio and that sounds a little to much to a FM station to me and not real AM any more
I found this very sad. You don't any real AM station's any more on line with a real AM sound and signal that is the real reason i don't listen any more I'm not much of a FM listener but a real AM freak
