There have been some good and some Questionable answers here but there is really only one thing that will get you better reception and that is a better antenna. For AM, that means either a specially built and tuned loop type antenna, or the longest wire you can attach to the radio terminals.

maybe a 'antenna booster'....but most of that noise is 'skywave interference'...get's worse on cloudy nights ? right.

There are various tips as I found out on eHow:

-Reverse the AC plug if it isn't polarized. (If you can flip the plug over, then it's non-polarized.)

-Plug the radio into a different AC outlet.

-Move the radio closer to a window.

-Experiment to learn if appliances and powered products in your home are causing interference: computer monitor, television, electric blanket, light dimmer, fluorescent light, hair dryer, air conditioner, smoke detector. If possible, turn off the offending item. Otherwise, move the radio to another room.

Does the radio station also broadcast online? If so, you could listen online and you will get better quality.
