How would a radio station go about getting more wattage?!

Question: In the US, the station will study if it can increase in size either by power or tower height and keep within the letter of the law about distance between like frequencied stations..etc etc

If that turns out ok, then a application is made to the FCC to do the upgrade and attach the study as proof that it can happen and stay within the FCC's rules.

The FCC will then decide and ultimately grant or deny the request.

Usually I've seen upgrade request take 2+ years to happen
This is NOT a overnight thing (that and the FCC give the station 3 years after it gives it's blessing to actually do the upgrade or lose the ability to do it without going thru the process again...)
