On the FM band, why are education-run stations, as well as news ones on the lowe!

Question: High school and college stations, as well as the boring realm of NPR all seem to reside on the lower frequencies of the broadcast FM band.

Like, they seem to be below 92 mhz.

Why is this?

Answers: High school and college stations, as well as the boring realm of NPR all seem to reside on the lower frequencies of the broadcast FM band.

Like, they seem to be below 92 mhz.

Why is this?

Because that portion of the band is specially set aside by the FCC for non commercial (read non profit) interest for broadcast so they won't have to fight the mega broadcasters with more money on the commercial part of the band.

Pretty much anybody who is non profit can go there.. and usually it's schools or organizations set up to promote something like music, public radio or religion

BUT only in the US... Canada and Mexico allow commercial broadcasting over the whole band
