Yes , you have to have a great view of the southern sky... It won't really work in doors and the display model may have been hooked to a outside antenna that you didn't see (or instead in a metro area receiving a repeater on a local tower you didn't see).
It's like Direct tv... you have to have a great view of the sky and sometimes even glass can affect how a radio receives.. but XM is not a true indoor radio like a regular AM/FM radio is
So your best bet may be investing in a outside antenna somewheres to install on your home close to the southern sky
As mentioned, you really need to get the antenna outside, pointing up. As an alternative, Delphi sells a "home repeater" that you set up and then can transmit the XM signal throughout your house so you can have your RoadyXT set up anywhere in the house.
