Gearbox, with all due respect aircraft do not transmit communications on normal AM frequencies. Communications take place between the range of 118.0 MHZ and below 137.0 MHz. Frequencies are sectioned off to avoid one use interfering with another. Non Directional Beacons however have frequency overlap with AM stations.
To the asker. Aircraft to tower communications take place between 118.0 and 121.4 MHz. Aircraft to ARTCC communications are on a higher frequency range. You can pick up an AM/FM/Aircraft band reciever for 100 USD. You shouldn't need a pilot's certificate to purchase one.
Use caution though, if you get a radio capable of transmitting and you transmit false instructions to an aircraft, that is a very serious crime.
