What makes a successfull radio station????!

Question: Radio is one of those few businesses that has two sets of customers. So to be successful you must please your listeners - and your advertisers must feel they are getting their money's worth.

A successful station is usually a consistent station that provides, by way of accurate research, exactly what the listener wants and expects. More listeners = more advertisers. Since there have to be some commercials, they might as well be good ones from the bigger companies and their agencies. The more successful stations attract those advertisers - the ones smart enough not to turn off the listener any more than necessary.

Listners

playing whateverone likes silly!
country and rap

a theme that relates to it's patrons.

the right DJ

Dj's make the station as a bartender makes the bar, but this needs to be in congruence with great marketing.

more music less commercials

good music no commercial interruption and less DJ talk!!!

Indy's new rock alternative x103 that's 103.3 on a radio dial or you can visit http://x103.com/main.html to listen

All of the above :) (very good answers before me, but I don't think any single answer by itself could/would support today's radio station).

Limited commercials and no censorship

SIRIUS...Long Live Howard Stern!

having quality content on your airwaves. without good music or talk shows you have nothing. you need to air things that people will want to hear. plus you have to figure out who your target demographic is going to be then go from there. if you do not know, target demographic is the people you want to reach, the people you want listening to your station or each individual show in that matter. then custom what you produce to that demographic. for an example, you want your target to be teen girls. then your going to make programming stuff that teen girls would want to hear, like boy bands......
You can't be successful if no one is listening basically :)

Not jus' listeners or (listners as some people can't spell). It's interacting with the listeners. Find out what they want & what their interests are. Gettin' feedback from them will help out. Try KQRS 92.5 out of Minneapolis/St. Paul.

As others said on here.. It comes down to Djs who can make the listener think that they are hanging out with a cool friend with a awesome music collection who leaves occasionally for a break here and there to talk about some things he owns or would like to own

The listener won't notice and/or care that he is being advertised to, he hears songs that even though he may not like, they stay cause they are worried they may miss something.

I'm from Louisiana and for example, we have a few stations that have been off the air for 10+ years and people still talk about them ..that is a sign of a great radio station.

Seamlessness is what makes a successful station in my opinion.
