Frank Zappa was indeed a Musical Genius. He was also a very smart man! He beat 2 large record companies in court (MGM and Warner Bros.). His music is quite understandable. You just have to listen to it. I agree that some of his music may not be the best for kids, there is quite a bit that is very much listenable for those of the younger type. Out of all the music Frank has written, there is some that will be caught in the ears and be enjoyed by everyone. Remember, Frank wrote his music for himself and if you happen to enjoy what he did, GREAT!! if not, oh well! Hope that helps you in some ways...

he was exceptional in his originality which is something to be proud of and no mistake!

Original, artistic, and a freak...Zappa's lyrics, writing and musical abilities were exceptional. All of this and he never finished High School. Don't know what his IQ was but with an imagination and abilities like he had he had to be genius level.

He was absolutely a musical genius. He knew music made you feel a certain way either by making you mad, aggressive, cheerful, or thought provoking. His style was groundbreaking in that it was not meant to be commercial, but for a certain community. That community found his music to be pure entertainment. The biggest community for him IMO were other musicians.
It is hard to understand because a lot of his music poked fun at the time period it was written. The early Mothers of Invention music poked fun at the music of the time and the people listening to it. A recurring theme in this incarnation of his band was Louie Louie. The early to mid seventies Mothers focused on all sorts of stuff from politics to monster movies. The late 70's - the early eighties focused on corporate labels and his unhappiness with the way he was treated by Warner Brothers. He also started to look at his political side. The rest of his career focused on the PMRC, televangelists and political figures.
Zappa always tried to make the best band possible. He always tried to recreate his studio work on the stage.

I believe the man was totally ahead of his time. I loved him too, he was cut short, in life, when he should still be creating.

Frank was a musical genius, who strived for perfection in his music. A friend who saw him live stated that he had stopped a live performance one time, and made a single musician practice a few bars of a song, that were not being played the way Zappa had written it. He stopped the entire band, and asked the musician if they were going to play his music, or just "hack at it." After repeated solo efforts, in front of the live crowd, the individual finally got the measures correct. Frank then had the entire band resume playing the song, and finished the performance.

Many musical artists got their start with Frank. Most notable were Lowell George of Little Feat, Alice Cooper, Steve Vai, and Captain Beefheart. Frank even helped finance some of those beginnings.

As a guitarist, Frank excelled. Zappa's music was very original, and his lyrics often satirical, in a political sense. He wrote, and performed music that was very technical, from a music theory standpoint. He often used odd time signatures, and mixed a variety of musical styles.

Zappa's fans were most often other musicians, or those associated with the drug culture of the 1960's through 1980's. In spite of this, Frank once stated, "I don't do drugs. I don't like the effect they have on some people." He also was quoted as saying that he felt that music, and sex, were the only true forms of expression.

he was a person who expressed one's self with his style of music and lyrics wrote
