Did anyone here have a bizarre experience yesterday while listening to the radio!

Question:

Did anyone here have a bizarre experience yesterday while listening to the radio??

I ask because around 1:15pm yesterday I was in my car in the Philadelphia area listening to our local classic rock station, 102.9 WMGK. I started hearing a very unusual amount of interference breaking through from another station that was from CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (102.9 KZIA)!!! It lasted for about 5 minutes and then "cleared up".
Anyone ELSE here experience something like that?

Answers:

It's called a "skip" and it frequently happens in mid summer or mid winter, although it could happen at any time.

If the conditions are right you can get stations from 1000s of miles away as you did. These far away stations will totally take over the local station's frequency. TV stations can also skip for hundreds of miles.

The farthest skip I ever got was a station out of Mobile, AL. I was living in Bismarck, ND at the time. That is 1800 miles away. I was freaking out! I wrote an email to the station.

Clouds and/or humidity are best conditions for catching skips. And after sundown on a humid night is when they really come out. You will get stations from hundreds of miles away.

Next time it's humid or cloudy, go out the the car and tune in a couple frequencies that are empty, meaning there is no local stations on them. Chances are good you will find a close skip or 2.

Another phomina is called "ducting." Works simular to a "skip" but the distances can be worldwide.

There are people that spend their free time searching for stations that skip or duct, they are called DX'ers. DX means Distance.
