How many songs does the average radio use?!

Question:

How many songs does the average radio use?

I'm sure that it differs from genre to genre, but how songs does the average radio station have in their playlist or "pool" of songs to use? Specifically a classic 60s-80s rock station.

Thanks!

Answers:

Top 40 stations usually have 4 stacks they rotate through, called the A, B, C, and D stacks. The A stack is the current hot hits, the B stack is the ones that are slipping. The C stack are the ones that they use to fill spots if the songs are the right length, but are kind of otherwise going nowhere. The D stack are songs that have been overplayed.

Not sure re: classic rock -- more album rock I suppose.

Most stations have about 45-55 minutes of actual songs depending on the programming. They are required to do at least one station ID an hour, and often do it on the half hour as well; and sponsors dictate how many "spots" (commercials) they play and how long they last. They have some leeway to play PSA's (public service announcements) in untaken commercial spots. These usually come on the half and quarter hours.

Some stations will carry a brief news update at the top of the hour, but not all of them -- this feed usually comes from someone other than the station, such as the network they are an affiliate of.

A lot of national radio programming is done by the "corporate office" and just piped into the local station, where the announcer, if anything, loads the content (tapes or whatever) and plays it, and handles patching in the different feeds.

Average song is about 4 minutes, so divide that into the actual amount of time that songs are playing. If it's 45 minutes of programming, then it's about 11 songs. If it's 55 minutes of programming, then it's more like 14 songs.

I am sure it's different at every station but this is how it was when I was at WSWG-FM in Mississippi.
