A radio station has a top rotation playlist that gets programmed in to the daily log. The list usually has about 15-25 songs and they will be played generally every two hours. Sometimes if you hear them more often than that it is because you were listening during a Dj shift change. What can happen then is: the dj dumps songs that didn't get played during their shift and they are usually told to keep high rotation songs in and dump others first, however when the new Dj comes in for their shift if the same song that was scheduled to play 2 hours later has now been moved up- sometimes as much as a half hour.

Believe it or not, the songs that are overplayed- and all songs in heavy rotation are- still get calls from listeners requesting them. Beyonce's "Irriplaceable" perfect example... playing on 12+ stations on heavy rotation, and people still called in to hear it. You want to tell them to just wait 5 minutes and surf the channels because you know it will be on someones station shortly, but you can't.

I am going to defend radio for a minute - although I completely agree with you and truly can't stand the frequency that songs get played when they are on the list for the same reason you do... burns you out on the song.
The average radio listener only listens for 45 minutes at a time. <---so there is another one of your reasons why.

Honestly, if you want to effect station playlists write in to their websites and vote on their songs, write the program director and tell them songs you want to hear. The Dj is really only your middle man anymore at most radio stations and can only play from the list they have - the program director is who gives them the list of music they can choose from.
