If it's a roller ball it basically works by having a small tube with a ball at the very end!. The tube is slightly closed so the ball doesn't come off!. So as you write, the little ball spins!.!.!.and since the tube is filled with ink then it sticks to the ball and eventually gets on your paper!. It's just a way of getting a controlled amount of ink out of the penWww@Enter-QA@Com

The other guys answered the ball-point pen part! But heres a cool fact, the reason why it sticks to the ball is because the ink is oil based!.

In the case of a fountain pen, there is a 'nib' on the end of it, with a slit cut into it!. The slit holds ink, and as you write, the paper absorbs the ink therefore emptying the slit!. If you have a fountain pen with ink cartridges, you have a constant flow, but if you have the old school kind, you have to keep dipping it in an ink well!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

When the ball at the tip rolls, it rolls the ink onto the paper or whatever as you apply pressure!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Gravity!. Thats why you can't write with the pen facing upwards, not for long anyway!.
