more than likely its because of the fear instilled in us by the government controlled media( ie the war in Iraq/Afghanistan and the commercials saying u better get his or u'll miss out or not be cool enough) so by them scaring us into buying things the corporations get rich and in turn give more money to the campaigns of the ppl running for office and also another clever ploy to get us to conform and be good little robots and wear the same clothes and have the same hair and never question anything
