Is it true that only males can be colour blind?!

Just somethink someone said to me please answer and no stupid suggestions!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
It's not strictly true, but males are FAR more likely to be colour blind than females!. It's because colour blindness is a genetic, sex-linked trait!. That means the gene 'for' colour blindness is carried one on the the sex chromosomes: the X chromosome!. It is a recessive condition, which means you have to have two copies of the mutant allele (gene) to make you colour blind!. Females have two X chromosomes, but males only have one!. So if a male inherits one mutant allele (leading to colour blindness) this will be expressed, whereas females inheriting only one mutant and one normal allele will not be colour blind!. The females would have to inherit two mutant alleles to be colourblind (i!.e!. be homozygous recessive)

Does that help!?

No, although the genetic mutation that causes it is on the X chromosome, so usually a female (having 2 X chromosomes) has a normal version of the gene which is dominant so although a carrier she will not be colour blind, if she inherits two mutations then she will be colour blind!. Males on the other hand only have one X chromosome (they are X,Y) and if they inherit an X with a mutation they will be colour blind because they have no "normal" version of the gene to dominate the colour blind version!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
