No, it's not an illness!.
It's strictly in the addiction category!. But I know why it is called an illness or disease so often!. It's because of several reasons!.
1!. It has all of these side affects (well not gambling), some of these are the same as certain illnesses!.
2!. They are trying to make it sound ten times worse than it is, because there are so many people that drink way too much now a days!.
So no!. It's not technically an illness!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No hon! It is an illness believe me - I've lived with an alcoholic father - he was nasty, abusive and horrible!. He was a college lecturer too, so that kind of sweeps away the stereotype of an an alcoholic!. It's a devastating thing, which unfortunatley he had no control over (he's dead now) , but maybe he could have done it f he was brave enough to seek help and stick with it!. It is a disease hon - not a career choice - I've seen first hand the devastation it can have in familiy life and everything else otherwise,!.I struggle now with my drinking, but the difference is - I'm taking the help that is available and am going to make it! Please don't be dismissive or judgemental hon - it is a disease and no-one makes the choice to do this!. Life hurts you that much when you can't see a way out and you turn to drink to blot out the hurt! Please be kind hon - not everyone in this world is as strong as you! xxxxxxxxWww@Enter-QA@Com
People with substance abuse problems have both a physical and a psychological component to their problem!. Unfortunately in our culture people are encouraged to use chemicals to go to a better place mentally, only to end up having to use it continually to stay there consistently!. Some drugs that are legal are almost as bad as others that are illegal, and just because it is legal does not mean using it is okay!. Many drugs exact a toll on the body and the mind!. There are lots of bipolar manic depressive people out there who are into self-medication!. Even food can be a drug which regularly turns people into whales!.
Of course other people make it their job to put the drug users down for their "moral weakness", basically for having problems with drugs they don't have themselves!. It is all quite hypocritical, of course!. We are all addicted to something and but by the grace of God and genetics there we might go also!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I know it sounds odd but those people cannot help what they are doing!. It comes to a point where they feel they can't function without their addiction!. For example if you ask these people if they would like to stop, quite often they say they do!. But it is the addiction which has now become involuntary rather than voluntary!. i!.e!. they no longer choose to pick up the alcohol or start gambling in the morning!. Hope that helps!
