The book that comes to mind for me is Blitz Cat by Robert Westall!. I was too upset with the ending and would have changed it so that the cat's family did recognise her!.
For all that she did throughout the story by saving many live, she isn't even recognised by her own family! It really upset me when I got to the end!!
