Many do not!. I believe this is one of the things George Carlin was referring to when he talked of "the dumbing down of society"!.!.!.!.quoth the raven, "Nevermore"!. :)Www@Enter-QA@Com

I haven't joined such a generation as you suggest!. I love the classics! I loved them then, and still love them now! If the new generation lacking in having these at access to them!.!.!.I do not think so, perhaps it is only that they do not enjoy, nor comprehend what is to be learned from them!.
I have no idea what middle school, nor high school requires of their students!. The only thing I know is that at this very present, is that art is the only thing I'd introduce them to, not teach!. Anything else may be alike standing before a firing squad of trigger finger shooters!
I'm not one to return to Dodge!!!Www@Enter-QA@Com

"Four score and seven years ago out father brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal!. Now we are engaged in a great civil war testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure!. We are met on a great battlefield of that war!. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives to preserve the Union!. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this!. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground!. The brave men who have fought here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract!. The world will little note nor long remember what we said here, but it can never forget what they did here!.!.!."

Oh, man I forgot the rest!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It's been a long time since I went to school but I do remember that rote memorization has shaped my mind in being able to remember lyrics, poetry, and the like!. I still remember the Gettysburg Address, for example, which I learned in 4th grade!. Use it or lose it!. Your noggin, that is!. And don't get me started singing every last verse of "I am the Walrus!." lol!. And I remember the first 12 lines of the Raven verbatim!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

None of that was 'required' even when I was in school Ma!. (graduated in '77)
And as for the 23 Psalm!.!.!. can you imagine the outcry if a teacher told his/her students they HAD to memorize that!?

It is all related!. Recent studies are showing that kids should not be getting homework!.!.
What ever happened to 'repetition + reinforcement = retention'Www@Enter-QA@Com

nope memorization is becoming a thing of the past (thank God)
In the world of NCLB, we're becoming a test prep nation but the good thing is that more teachers are pressing for students to know and think about the "why" and "how" rather than just the "what"!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
