ALL the time! I love my toes, and they love me back!. I use them to pet my cat when he walks by while my hands are occupied (i!.e!. if I'm painting my nails, eating, or doing something else that requires my hands)!.
And yes, as you pointed out, horses walk fine without toes, but the fact of the matter is that our toes help improve our agility during running and lengthen out strides when we walk!. If we didn't have toes, the center of force would stay under the ball of our feet, because our feet would stop there - however, with the addition of toes, you lengthen the arm of the lever (if you can imagine our foot as being a lever)!. Our calf muscles then contract at a much slower, more effective rate!.

I never really gave them much thought before i saw your question!.
To be honest, the only thing I find them useful for is scratching my dog!. OK I know this sounds stupid, but he likes to lie at my feet and rather then bend down and scratch him I use my toes!.
